"Spider-Man" producer Laura Ziskin died Sunday evening. She was 61 and had been battling breast cancer for 7 years.  Ziskin was perhaps best known for her work on the "Spider-Man" franchise, which brought in over $1.5 billion worldwide, making her one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood.  Ziskin produced the Academy Awards telecast two times, becoming the first won to produce the awards show solo in 2002 and earning multiple Emmy awards in the process. Though she struggled with cancer since receiving a Stage 3 diagnosis in 2004, Ziskin remained indefatigable, overseeing one.

Asian Film Industry Network (AFIN)

Asian Film Industry Network (AFIN)

Asian Film Industry Network (AFIN) was born with the recognition of the necessity to develop a better environment for the film industry in Asia. It is a network of film organizations representing various film industries, purposed to promote the Asian film industry and to stimulate marketing overseas with a background of comprehending the cultural diversity in Asia.

After the concept was born in 2002 at the first AFIN Meeting in Pusan with Asian film industry professionals, it took three years to establish the network's direction and formation. During this period, AFIN succeeded in organizing several examples of co-promotion activities in certain film festivals, which lead to the idea of administrating it in more organized form. As a result, AFIN was launched on October 11th, 2005 at the 10th Pusan International Film Festival.

AFIN goals & aims

AFIN main goal is to establish a harmonious relationship with the countries in the region so as to contribute to the growth of the Asian film industry by co-operation, co-promotion, co-exchange, and co-production. It is, in a broader sense, an opportunity to find the authentic identity of Asia, to build reciprocal relations and to facilitate the cooperative growth of the endorsed members. AFIN also makes an effort to support the introduction of Asian films and culture to the rest of the world. The exchange of information about film industries and policies, co-promotion, and pursuing of international co-productions are among others the objectives hoped to be accomplished in cooperation with endorsed members.
Activities and Membership

The representatives of AFIN member organizations gather twice a year to discuss the current issues of Asian film industry market and share views on the possibilities for joint activities. As of year 2004, Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and UNIJAPAN tie for co-promotional activities of Asian cinema at Toronto International Film Festival holding AFIN DESK and Asian Film Night Reception.

As of January 2009, the following organizations are the members of AFIN:
The Federation of National Film Associations of Thailand (FNFAT), Korean Film Council (KOFIC), Singapore Film Commission (SFC), UNIJAPAN (Japan's Association of the International Promotion of the Moving Image), Vietnam Media Corporation (VMCorp).

Any of the countries in Asian region are welcome to join and become members of AFIN. Membership is subject to AFIN Membership Agreement regulations.

Report on House Prices in Asia

Monday 15th of December 2008
Research undertaken by the Global Property Guide believes that property prices in Asia will continue a downward in 2009.Prices fell in most of Asia in the second half of 2008, because of inflation, interest rate increases, and contagion from the financial crisis.
In China, the post-Olympic slump has added to the overall economic slowdown. Plummeting sales figures are reported, although official and unofficial statistics provide conflicting views.
In Shanghai, newspapers report huge discounts. However, figures from e-homeday still show an impressive 24% y-o-y house price increase from a year earlier. We believe that house prices will continue to fall, as rental yields in China are moderate, according to Global Property Guide research.
Japan and South Korea are both quite dependent on electronic and automobile exports to Europe and America, and their economies are now in recession. The situation is expected to deteriorate in 2009, and house prices expected to fall further.
In Hong Kong and Singapore, finance-related job cuts are following the collapse of major US and European financial institutions. Local demand is also likely to weaken as exports fall. Dwelling price falls are expected.
In the Philippines, the real estate boom at the top-end of the market was financed by Overseas Filipinos, mainly those in the US, Europe and Japan, now in recession. A significant amount of new supply is expected to be completed in 2009, which may lead to overhang and more price falls.
In Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, a construction boom financed by South Korean firms has abruptly stopped as South Korea enters recession. The South Korean won is Asia’s worst performing currency, and Korean firms have been asked to pull out their foreign investments. Risky real estate investments in Southeast Asia have been among the first to be withdrawn. These countries are also prone to be affected by the global economic slowdown.

Japan's Mick Karn dies

Karn succumbs to cancer aged 52

Japan bassist Mick Karn has died aged 52.

Karn, who revealed in June 2010 that he had been diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer, passed away at his Chelsea home today (January 4), according to a statement on Mickkarn.net.

The statement added that Karn "was surrounded by his family and friends" at the time of his death, and that he "will be deeply missed by all".
Born Andonis Michaelides in Nicosia, Cyprus, Karn played with Japan from their formation in 1974 until their split in 1982, and again in 1991 during a brief reunion under the new name Rain Tree Crow. He also worked with Gary Numan, Kate Bush and Bauhaus founder member Peter Murphy, with whom he formed Dalis Car in 1984.
Karn moved back to Cyprus in 2004 with his wife and son, but returned to London last year. Following his cancer diagnosis, several appeals were launched via Mickkarn.net to help cover medical costs and offer financial support to his family.

Duran Duran bassist John Taylor today paid tribute to Karn on Duranduran.com, calling him "one of the great visual and sound stylists of the late 70s/early 80s".
